Do you have any hint, what I'm doing wrong ? It just plain doesn't work, you have to use the NT version, which uses the correct name for NUL in NT. I think this will be corrected in 1.12t, however, since I just moved the (DOS) mailing listserv software over to it and I have to run the DOS RMAIL with it. -- Drew Derbyshire UUPC/extended e-mail: software@kew.com Telephone: 617-279-9712 "Well, let's just say, 'if your VCR is still blinking 12:00, you don't want Linux'". --Bruce Perens, Debian's Fearless Leader ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jun 1997 15:37:20 -0500 From: "Drew Derbyshire - UUPC/Extended Support" Subject: /dev/nul: No such file or directory To: "Hermann Busch" On 14 Jun 1997 18:17:00 +0200, "Hermann Busch" wrote: > :-) Similar to my problem. To: uupc-info@kew.com Hello All! I have a UUCP feed for my domain from xs4all.nl and I read my mail (after it's converted with mygate and GIGO, see ftp.gigo.com) with my fidonet setup (fmail, golded, etc). Now I want to take a look at cq experiment with a few 'real' newsreaders, etc. I'd like to keep my fidonet setup running and create a 2nd feed (i.e. a copy of all incoming mail/news) to use for the newsreader. What's the best way to set this up? I can just keep a copy of the incoming spool files and rerun uuxqt with a different config but that's not elegant, to say the least. Is site hiding a usable option? When I have a 2nd dump of the spool files, what news/mailreader do you recommend for OS/2? I've seen some acceptable windoze stuff but I run OS/2... I recommend PMMail and inet.mail as smtp server. inet.mail is only needed as long as UUPC/extended doesn't have full smtp support, hopefully. You'll need two rexx scripts getting it to work with UUPC/extended - drop me a note, if necessary. MR2i does have an extension to use UUPC/extended. Some people prefer the MR2i interface over PMMail. Take a look at both. For news you might try changi, a good and well supported nntp server. It comes with a modified rnews and a better expire, to provide an interface with UUPC/extended. What could be wrong? I want to deliver local mails via SMTP, my mailserv points to my UUCP provider. Third: I am no sendmail guru (yet!) and I am looking for a working sendmail.cf to use with os2pops and uupc. The current sendmail.cf doesn't generate errors or problems (yet) but I feel unsure. You don't. The system doesn't support routing the same mail via two routes, since this implies duplicate copies at the system level. > Second: when I try to test my smtp setup with only 'dinges @ dinges' in my > hostpath file (fastsmtp turned on) I get a 'SMTP not available' though I _can_ > telnet to port 25 on my machine (so sendmail is accepting commands). UUPC/extended only uses the primary address of the single specified host for the for connections. This is the same static routing the rest of the package uses. This is one of the reasons the original description of the support outlines it as not suitable for a unreliable network. -ahd- -- Drew Derbyshire UUPC/extended e-mail: software@kew.com Telephone: 617-279-9712 "Anyone mind if I throw the terminal server in the pond?" - Tom Trautz ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 00:17:31 -0400 From: Kent Lundberg Subject: UUPC, OS2POPS, and fun fun fun To: uupc-info@kew.com, os2pops@raleigh.ibm.com Okay, okay. People seem really interested in the setup I have, so I am forwarding a description of what I have running so far, so others can try to duplicate it... Unfortunately, there are some bugs/features that we have to work around, but all in good time, Young Jedi. I sending this to both the uupc-info and os2pops mailing lists, because those packages are the major parts. But first, a few thoughts: 1. Thank you, Lord, for PERL. 2. Control-Z's, the DOS end-of-file marker, suck. 3. Control-M's suck, too. 4. UUPC's and OS2POPS's respective handling of 2 and 3 ain't great. Here we go: I have a private LAN, whose only connection to the Internet is through a UUCP connection. I use UUPC to transfer the mail. It works great. However, on the LAN, I (and the other users) want to use fancy tools like Netscape, that use POP3 to receive mail and SMTP to send it. From what I have heard, lots of you want to do this, too. I need to run a gateway. So I stick an OS/2 machine in the corner, and load it up with software. FOR RECEIVING MAIL INTO THE SYSTEM... To allow the users to receive mail via POP3, I choose the fabulous IBM EWS OS2POPS from http://www2.raleigh.ibm.com/misc/os2pops/ because it has a slick interface, and the author responds to email very quickly. OS2POPS comes with an endmailer called POPSMAIL that you are supposed to put into the Mlocal command in your sendmail.cf file so that it handles local delivery. I did this. Just like it says in the docs. It works. But that's not what I want to do. My email doesn't come from sendmail, it comes from UUPC. So I want to define POPSMAIL as the mail delivery agent for UUPC. Simple. Define a line in the global ALIASES files that says: kent: |popsmail e:\os2pops kent nobody Now when mail for "kent" comes in, UUPC's UUXQT/RMAIL pipes it into POPSMAIL instead of delivering it the UUPC mailbox. Great. Almost. You see, POPSMAIL expects to see a Control-Z (DOS EOF marker) to indicate the end of the file. Sendmail provides this. UUPC does not. So POPSMAIL never sees an ^Z, so it keeps reading empty lines from the pipe, and it keeps writing empty lines (with an added CR-LF) to my mailbox, until the harddisk fills up. Yep, it did this. PERL to the rescue. No problem. Get http://www.cdrom.com/pub/os2/unix/perl502.zip for the latest version. Use PERL to add a Control-Z to the end of the file being piped to OS2POPS. Here's the file POPZMAIL.PL: # This appends a Control-Z to the end of the standard input # and then pipes the result into OS2POPS popsmail.exe open(OUT,"|popsmail e:\\os2pops kent nobody"); print OUT ,"\cZ"; close(OUT); Note the double backslash in the path. So now the line in the global ALIASES file reads: kent: |perl5 e:\bin\popzmail.pl So UUXQT/RMAIL pipes the received message to PERL, which adds the required Control-Z, and then pipes it to POPSMAIL. And I can connect to the OS2POPS server running on the OS/2 machine and read my email. I love it! BUT, TO SEND MAIL OUT OF THE SYSTEM... This is almost working. Netscape (and others) sends mail via SMTP, so I need to run an SMTP server on my gateway. I don't really need (or want) a full-blown version of sendmail running, so I look for something smaller. I find SMTPD at http://www.cdrom.com/pub/os2/network/tcpip/smtpd.zip which almost works. It lets you define your own delivery agent on the command line. So I run it like this: smtpd -a e:\bin\rmail.exe -t But no matter what I send, RMAIL complains that about "Premature end of input file, no addressees to deliver mail to". I banged my head against the wall on this one for a while. Two days. Turns out that somewhere in the chain (it's probably Microsoft's fault) Control-M's were getting added to the end of each line. This makes RMAIL choke. Can you say "PERL to the rescue"? I knew you could. So this is another piece of glue file NOMRMAIL.PL: # This little ditty strips Control-M's out of the input stream... # and then pipes the result into UUPC's rmail -t open(OUT, "|rmail -t"); while() { s/\cM//; print OUT; } close(OUT); So now I run: smtpd -a e:\bin\perl5.exe e:\bin\nomrmail.pl And it works! Almost. This does successfully deliver mail to the local system via RMAIL. However, it turns out SMTPD was written to only accept mail for the local system. It refuses all other mail. It's an incoming gateway, not an outgoing gateway. No problem, it came with source code, and it looks like I just need to comment out a few lines and recompile to disable the check. But that will have to wait for the weekend. Now I need sleep... --> Kent Lundberg. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 08:52:42 -0500 From: "Drew Derbyshire - UUPC/Extended Support" Subject: UUPC, OS2POPS, and fun fun fun To: klund@mediaone.net On Fri, 13 Jun 1997 00:17:31 -0400, "Kent Lundberg" wrote: > Okay, okay. (It connections to remote clients and like, but needs the verbs defined.) Don't kill yourself with SMTPD (don't wait for me either), since it should be run in under a month. The machine has also been upgraded from 386/33 with 16M to a 486/66 with 32M; the resulting configuration has been opened up somewhat allow more concurrent access and we no are longer transparently reflecting the ZIP file downloads to www.clarkson.edu. (You can tell if you're getting the new server by the IP address -- the old machine is on our 192.195.203 subset, the new is is _not_.) The ftp server will also be moved to the new server later this weekend; a message will go out ONLY to uupc-info when the switch is made in our DNS. Report any problems with either server to me at software@kew.com. -- Drew Derbyshire UUPC/extended e-mail: software@kew.com Telephone: 617-279-9712 "Well, let's just say, 'if your VCR is still blinking 12:00, you don't want Linux'". --Bruce Perens, Debian's Fearless Leader ------------------------------ End of UUPC-Info-Request Digest ******************************
