The system is NT3.51 based and uses at to check for mail from local users (via SMTP) and then to dial out. When the incoming news feed has large files, newsrun bombs, although the files are converted to nns format. UUXQT reports that permission is denied for the log file, and the feed files stay in spool/machine/... . I recall a comment a week or two ago about this problem but didn't save it (focused on mail at the time). Can anyone shed any light on it. Of interest is that it seems also to cause UUPC to not make connections until the system has been re-booted and / or to cause at to forget about the jobs. David Hawke -- (Dr.) David V. There's also WinPMail (Pegasus Mail), which works splendidly with UUPC. THURN is a derivative of Mike Lawrie's SNUUPM that automates the setup of UUPC & PMail / WinPMail with the interfacing bits required, and the latest version is available as ftp://ftp.wcape.school.za/pub/msdos/uucp/thurn04b.zip or by email to majordomo@wcape.school.za with the message get files thurn04b.zip.uue Stephen --- Stephen Marquard, scm@silver.wcape.school.za 12 Silverdale, Pinelands 7405, Cape Town, SA ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Nov 1995 10:25:58 +0000 From: suzanne@black.co.uk Subject: Is there a FAQ? One of our users wants to pick up his mail from his mailbox here using uucp. The configuration in the docs is for dialing in to pick up mail rather than allowing dial in to you. I didn't need to update to 1.12 so you'll need to upgrade it to the latest UUPC yourself. Let me know if you'd like a copy. You need to have the NASI developer's kit as well. PLEASE don't distribute code based on 1.11q. I've been looking for a replacement for CMM for a long time, but there never were any alternatives (that I could find, or was told about). ...so I started writing my own [too]. I'm working on wrapping up some final issues and hope to have a beta by Thanksgiving. I wrote mine for a *extreme* novice users. I admin a few uucp sites for some classic cases. Eventually (next release) I plan to have the software report important configuration changes to a monitor via email (me on these sites), and allow me to email in config changes. Another nice feature is that it automagically sets up the UUPC/Extended config files (for a basic environment) based on info entered on a gui config screen. Planned features: - "seamless" PGP support - attachments - news? The biggest drawback is that I didn't have time to do it in VB or VC++. Since I was in a hurry and doing it for my situation I wrote it in FoxPro, with intentions to port it later possibly. If any of you would like to join efforts, let me know. I'm not in this for any other reason than to get my problem solved (find a decent GUI mailer that's EASY to use and works with UUPC). dave --- Dave Wieringa wieringa@xroads.com Mesa, AZ (recently moved from MI) http://www.cps.msu.edu/~wieringa ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Nov 95 13:46:43 -0700 From: ken@kgwcal.cuug.ab.ca Subject: uupc 12o and core dumps To: UUPC/Extended mailing list Drew: As you informed me, uupc12o (OS/2 32bit) core dumps, (in I believe rnews). I replaced the bad exe's with a prior version, which unfortunately is the one that erases major chunks of the active file. This has the effect of requiring me to erase all news and reset the active file every couple of days. In the interim, until 12p arrives, is there some version that I could use that eliminates both problems? Or is 12p available (even without the doc's?) thanks, Ken -- ***************************************************************** * Ken Wiens * * * Information Systems Manager * Using OS/2 and UUPC/extended * * Ranger Oil Limited * * * Calgary, Alberta, Canada * fax 403-251-6354 * * via ken@kgwcal.cuug.ab.ca * voice 403-251-2980 * ***************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Oct 95 14:54 EST From: haldi@healthdec.com Subject: Windows/UUPC front-end To: UUPC/Extended mailing list For what it's worth, here's the skinny on a Windows compatible front-end for UUPC that we are using here: We needed a quick & dirty way to give basic email to everybody here in the office, with a minimum amount of hardware and software investment, since we're moving to a new location in early '96 and will be switching over to a dedicated T1 setup after the move. We ended up with a VB 3.0 front-end sitting on top of an Access 2.0 db, giving users basic email functionality (no news reader stuff, though). All of the messaging functions get handled by the VB app, storing everything in the Access db until outgoing messages are processed in batch and pumped through the UUPC gateway. Incoming mail is parsed apart from the spool file, and deposited in the Access db, with the appropriate user's id number attached to it. Caveat emptor: This system does not have any bells and whistles. It has send and receive functions, save mail (only one folder per user), reply/forward, and a basic address book capability. The pros are the following: It is super-easy-to-use, it has been tested in WFW 3.11, Win NT 3.50 and 3.51 (workstation and server), and Win 95. User admin is mindless -- add one line to the PERMISSN file, and a record in the Access db User table and you have a new user account. Create a personal RC file only if you feel generous... We've been running it for about a year, and it handles a significant amount of email traffic without any trouble. If anybody is interested in the software, please contact me via direct email. I'm happy to give the code away for free. While there is no UUENCODE or MIME capability built in, it is completely RFC-822 compliant vis-a-vis headers, etc. The code is very straightforward, and you should not have trouble customizing it however you want. System requires VB 3.0 Pro, Access 2.0, and TrueGrid ver 2.0. Oh yeah, everything is in english, too. And please, no flames. I know its a dinky program that doesn't do much, but all we needed was a short-term kludge till we move to our new building, and this little program was thrown on my desk as a "hey, why don't you deal with this in your (nonexistant) free time" kind of project...
