A year and a half ago I had read "A Book of Ki" by Tohei and in ki-meditation I felt the stability, strength and fullness of this posture. But now I can't return the similar state (I don't think that I try to stop the flow of thoughts). Feeling of unconfidence appeared. Don't worry about the flow of thought. Trying to stop it is counter productive. When a though comes, let it come, and then let it go. Soon another will come, let it come, then let it go. Soon another will come. As you practice you will find that the time between thoughts will increase. The flow of thoughts never stops in this live. But with practice it will slow to a trickle. May be lack of it is the real problem. When I > felt I couldn't reach the state of oneness with the Universe every > time I felt failure and this increased my unconfidence. What do you > think about it? ... Well I think (hoping to be wrong though!) that most of us (especially myself) don't reach the state of oneness you talk about *ALL THE TIMES* I am not even sure whether I reached it on one single occasion. The only thing I can say is that AT TIMES I reach a state in which I feel *quite confortable* while doing Ki Meditation, I would say a state of general well being. Shuould I call it oneness with universe?...I don't know. Also I don't believe this state can be induced through will power, unless with this you mean being determined enough not to miss any of the sessions you have planned for Ki Meditation. Again, in my case the problem is just that, most of the times, and I find that forcing myself to doing meditation will not help. Zen minded people perhaps might argue with that though. As a last thing, I would advice you to take what books say with a "pinch of salt" and not too literally even though sometimes they are our only source of knowledge about a certain topic. An excerpt from * KI-AIKIDO ON MAUI that may be of help:"....Tohei Sensei calls Ki meditation "Ki no ishi ho" or "Ki method for strengthening the will-power". "Will power" is the faculty or function of the mind that enables us to experience alert calmness, or attentive calmness. How this works is not always easy to discuss in words. We tend to think of "will power" as a kind of inner force that we impose upon some aspect of our nature in order to attain a certain desired result. However in meditation this way of thinking can lead to very unsatisfactory results. In meditation, the more we try to "do" something, to control, or to accomplish some result, the more we will fail. It is as if we have a large tub of water that is very agitated, with many small waves on the surface. This is very much like our mind. One would never think to calm the waves in the tub by trying to use the hands to hold the water in place. We would simply wait on the side until the waves calm down on their own. When we meditate,"will power" is what is used to keep the hands out of the waves, and allow the inner self to wait patiently on the side while the waves of the mind gently, slowly begin to calm themselves down. In other words, meditation is a process that we "allow" to happen, not something that we "make" happen."-- Kris Buttermore From Owner-Ki-Info@pandora.hh.kew.com Mon Mar 23 18:30:18 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by pandora.hh.kew.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) id SAA04927 for ki-info-outgoing; Mon, 23 Mar 1998 18:20:27 -0500 (EST) Received: from out4.ibm.net (out4.ibm.net [165.87.194.239]) by pandora.hh.kew.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id SAA04910 for ; Mon, 23 Mar 1998 18:12:50 -0500 (EST) Received: from stevezim1 (slip-32-100-146-247.az.us.ibm.net [32.100.146.247]) by out4.ibm.net (8.8.5/8.6.9) with SMTP id XAA84648; Mon, 23 Mar 1998 23:12:45 GMT Message-Id: <3.0.1.32.19980323161146.006c6ac8@pop4.ibm.net> X-Sender: szim99@pop4.ibm.net X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Pro Version 3.0.1 (32) Date: Mon, 23 Mar 1998 16:11:46 -0700 To: ki-info@kew.com From: Steve Zimmerman Subject: Eto Sensei Seminar in Arizona Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: ki-info-request@kew.com Precedence: bulk The Arizona Ki Society announces a seminar with Harry Eto Sensei on April 30, May 1, 2, 3 Eto Sensei, 8th Dan, of Aloha Ki Society, Honolulu is 92 years old, an inspiration to all of us.
